UPSC exams

Postby beatrix_kiddo » Sat Jan 10, 2009 5:28 pm

Just today there was an ad in the paper inviting applications for the UPSC exams.
My father is making me take them. I know it is very honourable thing to serve your country but i am in the blind about this.
Can someone give the non-sugar coated details about this. Also the chances of actually cracking it.
Any help will be appreciated. :D

As far as I know UPSC is the holy grail. No matter how an IIM A or a AIIMS grad gets Paid, UPSC will be the most respected and powerful exam in India. It will change your life in every sense of the word. The power and the pride you get when you clear UPSC is no match to anything. Having said that getting through UPSC is no cake walk

But you have to aim for a particular post and then study according to it. So what exactly do you want to be??

An IAS ,IPS ,IFS or any of the others. then plan to study according to it. Choosing the subjects is also tricky you cannot always choose what you like. suppose you like mathematics , you choose mathematics then it will be very difficult for you to clear it in the main exam. because all the subjects are weighted equally, so it will be wiser to choose a subject which has less syllabus and easier to comprehend. Like policital science which may be new to you but easier to learn and score

Thank you indianbee
There is a difference between what one should do and what one wants to do.
I think I am cut out for tinkering with software all my life . I am too much of a geek to let go plus thats the only thing i am (semi) good at .
I do recommend UPSC verystrongly to anyone else who dosent know what to do after graduation.
But it sure needs dedication, even to apply. The application process itself takes like 18 months.

Hello ,
This is just to bring into light about IES ... Indian bee said about IAS,IPS,IFS... But after finishing B.Tech or BE we can serve our nation by taking IES exam... The syllabi is also not that different from what you study in your UG OR PG...All you have to do is to have a thourugh and basic knowledge about your core subjects... For example if u consider me I am doing ECE... For my IES exam i have to jut brush up all the topics...Nothing is new... Only two subjects are not from my core... that is MATERIAL SCIENCE and COMPUTER ENGINEERING... So engineering students those who have applied for IES start preparing seriously...

The IES examination pattern comprises of two parts
1. Objective papers
2.Conventional papers

In objective papers we have two parts one is general english and the next is general studies ( 2 hours, 200 marks max)

In conventional papers we have four parts...all are the core subjects which will be conducted as fours parts( first two will last for 2 hours, last two will last for 2 hours ,200 max for all 4 papers)

Cheers

Nice info there SRI, most people look towards IPS AND IAS as they are the most glamorous in the UPSC exam. Yeah as you rightly pointed out one can do IES as well

Please can you tell me what does IES stand for.
I have given UPSC-CMS [combined medical services] entrance exam twice and since the portion is same as that for other PG medical entrance exams, you just need to go through previous papers properly since medical exams have this tendency of repetition.
After you get selected in this exam, there is an interview of the selected candidate.
The CMS exam too is a long process with result being declared after a long time. Also there have always been questions on how fair the interviews are. [ To be very frank, all PG medical entrance exams which are held by interviews are most of the time not fair]
